How long does it take for breads to arrive?

A: The Breadery makes your order fresh on Monday or Tuesday and ships it to your door using UPS.  Normal shipping time is 1-3 days. Next day delivery is standard in Mid-Atlantic states.

What are the best ways to store my bread once it arrives?

A: The bread has a long shelf life of at least six to ten days at room temperature. Store breads in heavy plastic bag or "double" bag to keep moisture in and air out.

With their fresh, high quality ingredients, our breads also freeze extremely well.  Store bread in an airtight container or a heavy plastic bag.  Remove air and seal tightly.

Do the breads arrive sliced or unsliced?

A: You can specify sliced or unsliced on the order form. If you do not specify, loaves arrive sliced. In gifts, round breads are unsliced.

What makes these breads different from other breads?

A: We offer the freshest taste and highest quality natural nutrition available.  We pay special attention to detail.  First, we buy fresh, chemical free ingredients.  For instance when we purchase our grains we make sure they are the most nutritious available, such as hard red wheat from Montana.  Next, to retain highest nutrient and fiber content, we freshly mill our whole grains slowly at low temperatures on our onsite stone mill.  We grind slowly to minimize heat and to retain maximum nutrients.  Last, the seven hour "olde worlde" hand kneading and fermenting techniques used in our bakery ensure our breads come out the best tasting, and the most nutritional available.

We invest seven hours to handcraft each bread to provide you with the most "delicious and nutritious" fresh breads for you and your family.

How many flavors of bread are made?

A: We offer: Cheddar Parmesan, Garden Herb, Grains Galore, Honey Whole Wheat, Montana White, 5-Seed, Orange Cranberry Pecan,  Cinnamon Raisin Walnut and specialty breads.

In our Ellicott City bakery we offer breads on a rotating schedule. See  our baking schedule.

How are the breads made?

A: First the ingredients are mixed to form the bread dough, which then rises three to four hours using an "olde world" double or triple fermentation technique. The breads are kneaded and hand crafted into round or sandwich loaves. The loaves "rest" in a proofing area, which is a warm, moist environment for the bread to rise. The breads are then baked and placed on cooling racks for one to two hours. Our slow, natural method of making bread enhances flavors by allowing time for the optimal blending of ingredients, resulting in moist, aromatic, delicious breads.

How much oil and sugar do the breads contain?

A: Our breads our made without adding oil or sugar.  Most of our breads contain honey, which is a natural sweetener and preservative.

How much fiber and nutrients do the breads contain?

A: Our whole grain breads retain all the fiber and nutrients of the original whole grain. Store-bought breads are generally made of  "enriched" wheat flour, which means only five nutrients are artificially added back.

Are any of the breads Kosher?

A: Our breads are currently not certified Kosher. We have begun looking into certification.

What is The Breadery's History?

A: After many years of whole grain research, Michael Lanasa founded The Breadery in 1996 and dedicated it to producing fresh, whole grain breads from flours milled onsite daily and without chemical additives or preservatives. Many chronic health problems are alleviated by fresh, nutritious foods with high fiber, and since grain products are the "staff of life", the fresh, whole grain breads from The Breadery were developed to fulfill a major role in a healthy diet.

Where is the store located?

9251 Baltimore National Pike
Ellicott City, MD 21042.
